The Japanese Secret Behind a Hygienic Warehouse

At KSW, we use Japanese Shikkui plaster technology on the interior walls of our warehouse to create a cleaner, healthier, and more hygienic storage environment. Shikkui is a traditional Japanese wall coating made from natural materials and has been trusted for centuries for its durability and environmental benefits.

One of the key advantages of Shikkui is its ability to regulate humidity levels naturally, helping prevent excess moisture buildup inside the warehouse. This significantly reduces the risk of mold growth, one of the biggest challenges in storing agricultural products. By maintaining a stable and hygienic environment, Shikkui helps preserve the quality and freshness of vegetables throughout the storage process.

In addition, Shikkui creates a naturally alkaline atmosphere that helps inhibit the growth of bacteria and fungi, contributing to a healthier storage space. This unique combination of humidity control, mold prevention, and hygiene support makes Shikkui an important part of KSW’s commitment to quality, food safety, and Japanese-inspired operational excellence.

Through the use of innovative technologies like Shikkui, we continue to build warehousing systems that protect product quality while supporting a safer and more sustainable agricultural supply chain.

Nizuri – A Traditional Japanese Warehouse Technology

Kawasaki Rikuso Transportation (KRT), Japan, uses Nizuri, a traditional Japanese warehouse technique, to create a clean, stable, and safe storage environment for agricultural commodities. Nizuri is a wooden lattice framework installed along the warehouse walls, leaving a small gap that allows continuous air circulation.

This natural airflow helps control humidity, prevents moisture from accumulating on the walls, and reduces the risk of mold growth. It also protects stored products from direct contact with the walls, improving storage conditions and preserving product quality.

For many years, KRT has successfully used the Nizuri system in Japan to store commodities such as rice and salt, especially in hot and humid climates. By combining traditional Japanese knowledge with modern warehouse management, KRT ensures better food safety, improved storage efficiency, and longer-lasting freshness of agricultural products.
